Elsevier (Excerpta Medica) knowledge portal
http://www.inate.org

Introduction

Elsevier is a leading multiple media publisher in the area of scientific, technical and medical products and services employing 7000 employees at 99 locations all over the world.

Excerpta Medica is a business unit of Elsevier BV, dedicated to international medical communication. The company has specialised in creating and implementing strategic, marketing and communication programmes for pharmaceutical companies.
For Excerpta Medica, Datacon developed the knowledge portal www.inate.org. INATE an initiative of the INATE core group, sponsored by Aventis and published by Excerpta Medica. The knowledge platform is a collection point for medical specialists and patients in the area of thrombosis. Medical specialists can subscribe to the site and be informed on the latest developments in the area of thrombosis.

Proposal

After the first version of the site, Datacon has made proposals for improving the site to increase degree of attention and user friendlyness.

By clustering information on target group and area of interest a logic navigation structure is developed. Based on this structure a creative design was created.

Functional prototype

After Excerpta Medica had approved the design proposal, a schematic functional model was developed of all divisions of the website. After feedback and approval the site was put in HTML as a running prototype.

Functionalities

Because content is maintained by different authors it was necessary to develop a role based content management system.

For this Elsevier chose to use iStream, the Microsoft based content management system of Datacon.

Medical specialists can subscribe to the portal to address specialist articles and receive a newsletter. Through the iStream mail campaign manager these subscribers are informed of the latest developments in the area of thrombosis via an e-mail newsletter.
